JEE Main 2026 Exam Day Guidelines, Dress Code & Documents

Planning for JEE Main 2026 exam day? Check complete guidelines on dress code, documents required, prohibited items, shift timings & hall rules. Read now!

You have spent months buried in NCERT books, solving Physics problems at midnight, revising Organic Chemistry reactions, and taking mock tests after mock tests. You have done the hard part. But here is something most JEE aspirants learn the hard way: all of that effort can come undone if you are not prepared for the exam day itself.

Every year, thousands of students across India face avoidable problems on the day of their JEE Main exam โ€” arriving late, carrying the wrong documents, wearing prohibited clothing, or forgetting basic rules of the exam hall. In some cases, candidates are denied entry simply because they did not read the official guidelines carefully.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) releases detailed JEE Main 2026 session 2 exam day guidelines that cover everything from what to wear and what to carry, to how to behave inside the hall and what happens if you break the rules. This blog is your one-stop, easy-to-understand guide to everything you need to know before you walk into that exam centre.

JEE Main 2026 Exam Schedule & Shift Timings

The JEE Main 2026 exam is conducted in two shifts every day. The morning shift runs from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and the evening shift runs from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

Session 2 Exam Dates: The JEE Main 2026 Session 2 exam is scheduled from April 2 to 9, 2026.

Here is the complete shift-wise timeline every candidate must know:

Activity Shift 1 (Morning) Shift 2 (Afternoon)
Reporting Time 7:00 AM 1:00 PM
Entry into Exam Hall 7:00 AM - 8:30 AM 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM
Candidate Login & Instruction Reading 8:50 AM 2:50 PM
Exam Starts 9:00 AM 3:00 PM
Exam Ends 12:00 PM 6:00 PM
Gate Closing Time 8:30 AM (strict) 2:30 PM (strict)

JEE Main 2026 Reporting Time: When Should You Reach the Exam Centre?

This is one of the things that people don't think about enough when they get ready for an exam. Students often figure out how long it will take them to get to the center, but they forget to include security checks, biometric verification, document verification, and finding their seat.

According to the NTA rules, candidates must arrive at the exam center at least 1.5 to 2 hours before the exam starts. It takes a lot of time to check IDs, take biometric attendance, and check seating arrangements.

Tip: If your test starts at 9:00 AM, try to get to the center gate by 7:00 AM sharp. Don't wait until 7:30 AM because you think you have time. Lines for frisking and biometric registration can be longer than you think, especially at bigger centers in major metropolitan areas.

Important Documents Required for JEE Main 2026 Exam Day

One of the main reasons candidates are turned away at the exam gate is that they don't have the right documentation. NTA has a strict "no entry without a document" rule.

Here is a full list of the documentation that students need to bring in the JEE mains exam:

Document Details
JEE Main 2026 Admit Card Printed copy (A4 size), downloaded from jeemain.nta.nic.in. A self-attested photo must be pasted on it. Digital copies on phones are NOT accepted.
Valid Photo ID Proof Original government-issued ID โ€” Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Voter ID, Passport, or Driving Licence. Photocopies are NOT accepted
Passport-Size Photographs 4 to 5 recent photographs, identical to the one uploaded during registration. One is required for the attendance sheet
Self-Declaration Form Duly filled and signed undertaking as per NTA's instructions.
PwD Certificate If applicable, an original certificate issued by the competent authority.
Photo Verification Certificate For candidates who registered using a non-Aadhaar ID (must have been uploaded before January 15, 2026).
Medical Certificate For diabetic candidates who need to carry food items inside the exam hall.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: Candidates can keep all documents in a transparent pouch for safety and quick access at the security gate. Print at least 2-3 copies of your admit card the night before, if one gets torn or wet, you have a backup.

Common mistake to avoid: Many students bring a photocopy of their Aadhaar card, thinking it will work. It will not. Always carry the original.

What is the JEE Main 2026 Dress Code for Male Candidates

NTA has not prescribed a fixed uniform for JEE Main, but it has issued very clear guidelines on what is and is not acceptable. The dress code exists primarily to make security frisking faster and to prevent any possibility of hiding prohibited materials

Category Allowed Not Allowed
Clothing Plain t-shirt, shirt, jeans, trousers, light kurta Full-sleeve shirts with buttons, heavy fabric, embroidered clothing
Footwear Slippers, sandals, floaters with thin soles Shoes, boots, or footwear with thick soles
Accessories None required Belt, cap, goggles, watch, rings, chains, bracelets

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: Wear clothes with elastic waistbands instead of belt-required trousers to speed up frisking and avoid any issues at the security gate.

What is the JEE Main 2026 Dress Code for Female Candidates

Female candidates should pay special attention to dress code guidelines because accessories, jewellery, and layered clothing are areas where many face trouble at the frisking stage. Below are the summary of items allowed and not allowed.

Exam Hall Rules & Conduct Guidelines

Once you are inside the exam hall, a separate set of rules kicks in. These are not suggestions, they are mandatory regulations.

Before the exam starts:

  • Take your designated seat and do not sit anywhere else.
  • Log in to the computer system at the time specified by the invigilator.
  • Read all the on-screen instructions carefully before the test begins.

During the exam:

  • All rough work must be done on the rough sheet provided by the invigilator inside the exam room. On completion of the test, candidates must hand over all rough sheets to the invigilator on duty.
  • Do not communicate with any other candidate during the exam.
  • Do not attempt to leave the hall before the exam concludes.
  • Raise your hand if you need the invigilator's attention for any issue.

Toilet breaks:

  • Post-toilet frisking may be conducted for all candidates This is a standard security procedure, do not be surprised or alarmed.

After the exam:

  • Do not take any printed material, rough sheets, or question paper copies outside the exam hall.
  • Submit everything as instructed by the invigilator before leaving.

Special Provisions: PwD Candidates & Diabetic Students

NTA has made thoughtful accommodations for candidates with specific needs.

For PwD/PwBD Candidates:

PwD candidates may receive an additional 20 minutes per hour. Scribe or reader assistance can be arranged as per NTA rules, and approved assistive devices are permitted with the relevant certificate. NTA allows diabetic students to carry certain food items for medical reasons.

Permissible items include bananas, oranges, or apples. Plain water in transparent bottles is allowed. Chocolates, packed juices, and candies are not permitted, even for diabetic candidates. Ensure you carry a medical certificate to avoid any questions at the gate.

New in 2026: Facial Recognition Technology at Exam Centres

This is new, and every candidate appearing in 2026 must be aware of it.

Starting JEE Main 2026, NTA is implementing Facial Recognition Technology at exam centres. Your identity will be verified by matching your face with the photo uploaded during registration.

Candidates must ensure they do not wear heavy makeup or alter their appearance drastically compared to their application photo.

In practical terms, this means:

  • Girls who wore heavy kajal or dramatic makeup in their application photo should replicate that look โ€” or go minimal for both.
  • Boys who had a beard in their photo should maintain a similar look.
  • The camera system will flag discrepancies, which can cause delays at entry.

This technology has been introduced to prevent impersonation, which has been a concern in large-scale examinations in India.

Unfair Means & Consequences: What Every Candidate Must Know

NTA takes examination integrity extremely seriously. The consequences of violating exam rules go far beyond just that one exam.

Violation Possible Consequence
Carrying mobile phone or electronic device Immediate disqualification
Impersonation or proxy attendance Debarment from future NTA exams + legal action
Copying from any source Cancellation of results
Possessing chits or notes inside the hall Disqualification + FIR under relevant laws
Misbehaving with invigilator Barred from appearing in JEE Main again
Tampering with the computer system Legal proceedings under the IT Act

The message is simple โ€” do not risk years of preparation for a shortcut that is almost certainly going to get caught.
