In an experiment of measuring the refractive index of a glass slab using travelling microscope in physics lab, a student measures real thickness of the glass slab as5.25 mmand apparent thickness of the glass slab at5.00 mm. Travelling microscope has20divisions in onecmon main scale and50divisions on Vernier scale is equal to49divisions on main scale. The estimated uncertainty in the measurement of refractive index of the slab isx10×10-3, wherexis ______

Answer:
41.00
Solution:

Given:

50 VSD=49MSD1VSD=4950MSD

So least count will be

=1MSD-1VSD=120 cm-4950·120 cm

=150×120 cm=0.01 mm

As we know, μ=hh'=5.255.00

Applying log on both sides, we get

lnμ=lnhlnh

Differentiating both sides, we get

dμμ=dhh-dh'h'

For calculation, all errors will be added, therefore

dμ=0.015.25+0.015.00μ

=4110×10-3

Hence, x=41
