Calculate the ratio of the speed of sound in neon to that in water vapour at any temperature. Given that the molecular weight of neon gas=2.02×10-2 kg mole-1and molecular weight of water vapour=1.8×10-2 kg mole-1.γneon=53and γ for water vapour=43.

Options:

Answer:
A
Solution:

Let v1and v2be the speeds of sound in neon and water vapour respectively. Suppose that M1 and M2are the molecular weights of neon and water vapour respectively. If γ is the ratio of the two specific heats, then

υ 1 υ 2 = RT  γ neon M 1 × M 2 RT  γ water vapour = M 2 M 1 × γ neon γ water vapour

Here,M1=2.02×10-2 kg mole-1;

M2=1.8×10-2 kg mole-1

∴ υ 1 υ 2 = 1 · 8 × 1 0 - 2 × 5 / 3 2 · 0 2 × 1 0 - 2 × 4 / 3 = 1 . 1
