ChemistryThermodynamics - IICalculation of DSMedium2 minPYQ_2020
ChemistryMediumnumerical

Tin is obtained from cassiterite by reduction with coke. Use the data given below to determine the minimum temperature (in K) at which the reduction of cassiterite by coke would take place.

298 K: ΔfH0SnO2(s)=-581.0 kJ mol-1, ΔfH0CO2(g)=-394.0 kJ mol-1

S0SnO2(s)=56.0 JK-1 mol-1, S0(Sn(s))=52.0 JK-1 mol-1

S0(C(s))=6.0 JK-1mol-1, S0CO2(g)=210.0 JK-1mol-1

Assume that the enthalpies and the entropies are temperature independent.

Answer:
935.00
Solution:

SnO2(s)+C(s)Sn(s)+CO2(g)

ΔHrxn0=ΔHf0CO2(g)-ΔHf0SnO2(s)

=-394.0-[-581.0]

=187 KJ

ΔSrxn0=S0(Sn(s))+S0CO2(g)-S0SnO2,(s)-S0(C(s))

=52+210-56-6

=200 J

ΔG=ΔH-TΔS

For reaction to be spontaneous

ΔG<0

ΔH-TΔS<0

187×1000-T×200<0

T>935 K
