Passage / Comprehension
KMnO4 act as oxidising agent in acidic, basic and neutral medium.
In acidic medium KMnO4 oxidises I- to I2 , into C2O42- into CO2
Answer the following questions.
On reaction of KMnO4 with KI in alkaline medium, KMnO4 oxidizes KI to salt "X" and itself gets reduced to compound "Y". The number of atoms in one molecule of "X" is "a" and oxidation state of metal in "Y" is b.
Then calculate (a+b).
Answer:
9.00
Solution:
In alkaline medium, KMnO₄ oxidizes KI to KIO₃ (X) and reduces to MnO₂ (Y).
In KIO₃, a = 1 (K) + 1 (I) + 3 (O) = 5 atoms.
In MnO₂, oxidation state of Mn is b = +4.
Therefore, a + b = 5 + 4 = 9.
The calculated value is 9.
