Rusting refers to the creation of rust on the surface of iron objects or structures, which is a mixture of iron oxides. In a water-rich environment, rust is created through a redox interaction between oxygen and iron (or high levels of moisture). The creation of a layer of a red, flaky substance that quickly crumbles into a powder characterises the rusting of iron.

As the tin coating is peeled off, then iron is exposed to the atmosphere.

Because rusting occurs as a result of a chemical interaction between iron and air in the presence of moisture, it is a chemical alteration. The iron would not have rusted and gained a brown texture from its dull grey one if the chemical interaction between them had not occurred. As a result, a new substance known as rust forms on the surface of iron.
