A beam of light consisting of two wavelengths,650 nmand520 nmis used to obtain interference fringes in Young's double-slit experiment. What is the least distance (inm) from a central maximum where the bright fringes due to both the wavelengths coincide? The distance between the slits is3 mmand the distance between the plane of the slits and the screen is150 cm.

Answer:
1.30
Solution:

Let "y' be the linear distance between the centre of screen and the point at which the bright fringes due to both wavelength coincides. Letn1thnumber of bright fringe with wavelengthλ1coincides withn2mnumber of bright fringe with wavelengthλ2.
∴ n1β1=n2β2
⇒n1λ1Dd=n2λ2Dd
⇒n1λ1=n2λ2…(i)
Also at first position, thenthbright fringe of one will coincide with(n+1)thbright of other.
Ifλ2<λ1
So thenn2>n1
⇒n2=n1+1…(ii)
Using equation (ii) and equation (i),
n1λ1=n1+1λ2
⇒n1650×10-9=n1+1520×10-9
⇒65n1=52n1+52
⇒13n1=52
⇒n1=4
Thus,y=n1β1
=n1λ1Dd
=46.5×10-71.53×10-3
=1.3×10-3 m
=1.3 mm
