In Young's double-slit experiment the intensity at a point where the path difference isλ 6 ( λ being the wavelength of light used) is I. If I 0 denotes the maximum intensity, I I 0 is equal to

Options:

Answer:
A
Solution:

In Young's double slit experiment intensity at a point is given by

I = I 0  cos 2 ϕ 2

where ϕ = phase difference,

I 0 = maximum intensity

or I I 0 = cos 2 ϕ 2 .......(i)

Phase difference ϕ = 2 π λ × path difference

∴ ϕ = 2 π λ × λ 6 or    ϕ = π 3 .......(ii)

Substitute equation (ii) in equation (i), we get

I I 0 = cos 2 π 6 or I I 0 = 3 4 .
