The mean lives of a radioactive substances are 1620 yrs and 405 yrs for α - emission and β - emission respectively. Find out the time during which three-fourth of a sample will decay if it is decaying both by α - emission and β - emission simultaneously

Options:

Answer:
A
Solution:

Let at some instant of time t, number of atoms of the radioactive substance are N. It may decay either by α - emission on by β- emission. So, we can write,

- d⁡ N⁡ d⁡ t net = - d⁡ N⁡ d⁡ t α + - d⁡ N⁡ d⁡ t β

If the effective decay constant is λ, then

λ N⁡ = λ α N⁡ + λ β N⁡

∴ λ ⁡ = λ α + λ β = 1 1 6 2 0 + 1 4 0 5

= 1 3 2 4 year - 1

Now, N⁡ 0 4 = N⁡ 0 e⁡ - λ t

∴ - λ t = ln 1 4 = - 1 . 3 8 6

or 1 3 2 4 t = 1 . 3 8 6

∴                  t = 449 yrs
