For the circuit(a), $Z = R = 40 Ω$ . Hence,

$I_{r m s} = \frac{220}{40} = 5.5 A$

$X_{L} = 2 π f L = 2 π \times 50 \times 50 \times 10^{- 3} = 15.7 Ω$ and $X_{C} = \frac{1}{2 π f C} = \frac{1}{2 π \times 50 \times 0.5 \times 10^{- 6}} = 6369 Ω$

For the circuit(b), $Z = \sqrt{R^{2} + {(X_{L} - X_{C})}^{2}} > 40 Ω$ as

$X_{L}$ is not equal to $X_{C}$ . So rms current in (b) can never be larger than (a)
