Three unequal resistors in parallel are equivalent to a resistance1 Ω. If two of them are in the ratio1:2and if no resistance value is fractional, what will be the largest of the three resistance in ohm?

Answer:
6.00
Solution:

Let the resistances beR1, R2andR3

∴R1R2=12⟹R1=k, R2=2k

In parallel1R=1R1+1R2+1R3

11=1k+12k+1R3

1R3=1-1k=12k

      =2k-2-12k=2k-32k

R3=2k2k-3

If k = 1, thenR3is found to be negative, which is impossible.

If k = 2, thenR1=2, R2=4 R3=4

R2=R3, not satisfying the condition of the question that all resistance are unequal.

If k=3, then R1=3, R2=6

    R3=2 Ω

∴ Largest resistance =6 Ω
