Law of equivalence is very useful while doing quantitative analysis for chemical reactions. Valence factor of reducing agent is number of electrons donated by one particle of reducing agent. Similarly valence factor of oxidising agent is number of electron accepted by one particle of oxidising agent. Number of equivalents = number of moles × valence factor

At equivalence point, number of equivalents of reactants will be same for a chemical reaction.

A 200 g sample of a mixture containing sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and sodium sulphate is gently heated till the evolution of ceases. The volume of at 2.5 atm pressure and at 300 K is measured to be 3 L . A 200 g of the same sample requires 1.5 L of ( 1 M ) HCl for complete neutralisation. Calculate the mass % of in mixture. [Atomic mass : Na = 23, S = 32] (Take R = 1/12 L-atm mol-1 K-1 )

Answer:
23.85
Solution:

Question Explanation: Find the mass % of Na₂CO₃ in the mixture. Concept: Double titration Solution: On heating, only NaHCO₃ decomposes:

Moles of CO₂ evolved () =

From stoichiometry, moles of NaHCO₃ =

For complete neutralization, total moles of HCl =

Neutralization equations:

Mass of Na₂CO₃ = moles molar mass =

Mass % of Na₂CO₃ =

Final Answer: 23.85%
