Chemistry - Metallurgy Question with Solution | TestHub
Chief ore of zinc is zinc blende (ZnS). The ore is concentrated by the froth flotation process and then heated in air to convert ZnS to ZnO.
2ZnS + 3O2 → 2ZnO + 2SO2 .............(i)
(i) The ZnO thus formed is treated with dilute sulphuric acid :
ZnO + H2SO4 → ZnSO4 + H2O........ ..(ii)
On electrolysis of zinc sulphate, zinc metal is produced :
ZnSO4 + H2O → Zn + H2SO4+ O2 ........ (iii)
What mass of Zn in kg will be obtained from an ore containing 225 kg of ZnS ?
(Zn = 65 , S = 32, O = 16)
Answer:
Solution:
The overall reaction from ZnS to Zn is:
ZnS → Zn
Molar mass of ZnS = g/mol
Molar mass of Zn = g/mol
From the stoichiometry, 1 mole of ZnS yields 1 mole of Zn.
Therefore, 97 kg of ZnS yields 65 kg of Zn.
Mass of Zn obtained from 225 kg of ZnS:
Mass of Zn =
Mass of Zn = kg
Mass of Zn = kg
Mass of Zn = kg
The mass of Zn obtained is approximately 150.77 kg.
