On reaction of cis-2-phenyl-1-bromocyclopentane with alc. KOH produces a compound (X).

(X) on reaction with dil. produces ( Y ). Which of the following statement is incorrect for ( X ) and ?

Options:

Answer:
A
Solution:

The reaction of cis-2-phenyl-1-bromocyclopentane with alc. KOH leads to the formation of 1-phenylcyclopentene (X) via an E2 elimination reaction. The subsequent reaction of (X) with dil. H₂SO₄ results in the formation of 1-phenylcyclopentanol (Y) through an electrophilic addition of water.

Statement A is incorrect because 1-phenylcyclopentanol (Y) is a 2° alcohol, not a 3° alcohol. Also, the chiral carbon is NOT present in the major product.

Statement B is correct; the IUPAC name of (X) is indeed 1-phenylcyclopentene.

Statement C is correct; no carbocation rearrangement occurs during the hydration of the alkene.

Statement D is correct; both (X) and (Y) are optically inactive due to the absence of a chiral center in (X) and the formation of a racemic mixture in (Y) if a chiral center were to be formed.
