Which one of the following two compounds is more basic and why?

(a) structure (b) structure

Options:

Answer:
A
Solution:

In (a) (trans-1,2-diaminocyclopropane) the two amino groups lie on opposite faces of the ring. In (b) (the cis isomer) they lie on the same face, close together. When one nitrogen of (b) is protonated, the neighbouring NH₂ donates a hydrogen bond to the new NH₃⁺ group, stabilising the conjugate acid and making protonation easier. A more stable conjugate acid means a stronger base, so (b) is more basic.
