Why does all-cis [10]annulene fail to show aromatic stability even though it has 10 π electrons ?

structure

Options:

Answer:
A
Solution:

10 is 4n+2 (n = 2), so a planar ring would be aromatic. But a regular planar ten-membered ring with all-cis double bonds needs C-C-C angles of 144 degrees, far from 120 degrees, so the ring cannot stay planar. The p orbitals stop overlapping continuously and the molecule behaves as an ordinary polyene.
