Passage / Comprehension

One of the strongest Vander Wall force in which hydrogen is bonded in between two high electronegative elements like F, O, N then the bond formed is called hydrogen bond. Extent of H-bonding decides M.P, boiling point, viscocity, solubility and volatility, vapour pressure of any solvent or component in gaseous state.

 

Vapour pressure is the pressure exerted by molecules in gaseous phase on wall of closed container at given temperature.

Solution:

Compound I (p-hydroxybenzaldehyde) shows intermolecular H-bonding, while II (o-hydroxybenzaldehyde) shows intramolecular H-bonding.

Due to stronger intermolecular attraction, I has lower vapour pressure than II.

Intramolecular H-bonding in II reduces association → higher vapour pressure and lower solubility.
