The wave function for an atomic orbital of a single electron atom or ion is:

$ψ (r, θ, ϕ) = \frac{2}{3} (\frac{Z}{3 a _{0}})^{3/2} (1 - σ) (12 - 8 σ + σ^{2}) \cdot σ \cdot e^{- σ /2} \cdot cos θ$

where $σ = \frac{2 Z r}{n a _{0}}$ and $a_{0} = 0.529 \overset{˚}{A}$ . All other parameters have their usual meaning.

Solution:

The degree of polynomial in r is 3

∴ No of radial node $= n - ℓ - 1 = 3$

∴ No of angular node $= ℓ = 1$

$∴ n = 5$

$∴ n + ℓ = 5 + 1 = 6$
