Step–wise sequence:

1. Propane + Br₂ / hν

Radical bromination is highly selective → bromine goes to the secondary carbon.

X = 2-bromopropane (isopropyl bromide)

2. X + Mg / Et₂O

Formation of Grignard reagent:

$C H_{3} - C H B r - C H_{3} + M g \to C H_{3} - C H (M g B r) - C H_{3}$

Y = isopropyl magnesium bromide (2-propylmagnesium bromide)

3. Y + HCHO then H₃O⁺

Grignard with formaldehyde → primary alcohol having one extra carbon than the Grignard alkyl group:
