Human Genome Project (HGP) was a mega project started in 1990 to identify approximately$20000-25000$genes present in around$3\times {10}^9$base pairs that make up human DNA. Two methodologies were used in HGP namely

i) EST -Expressed sequence tags - which focused on identifying all the genes that are expressed as RNA

ii) Whole genome sequencing - sequence all the coding and non-coding regions and later assigning different regions in a sequence to its function (Sequence annotation)

This has helped us in understanding various molecular mechanism and treatment of various diseases.
