The placenta is a temporary structure that connects the developing foetus to the uterus. It is a fetomaternal organ as it has two parts: chorionic vili that is the foetal part and decidua basalis that is the maternal part. This structure has many functions like transport of nutrients and gases from uterus to the foetus. It also brings about removal of waste from the foetus. It also secretes many hormones like estrogen, human chorionic gonadotrophin, progesterone, human placental lactogen, etc. Oxytocin which is regarded as the birth hormone is secreted from pituitary and not placenta.
