The corpus luteum plays an important role in the preparation of endometrium for the implantation of fertilized egg by secreting estrogen and progesterone hormones. But if the egg is not fertilized then the corpus luteum begins to degenerate and it stops the production of progesterone and estrogen hormones, which causes shedding of the endometrium lining with menstrual bleeding.
