Passage / Comprehension
Normally, when we consider the behaviour of gases we neglect the effect of gravity. The mass of the molecules of the gas is very small and hence their rms speed at room temperature is so high that the effect of gravity is negligible. But if the gas molecule moves by large distance against gravity, the effect of gravity may become prominent.
Here for simplistic analysis, we will assume that the acceleration of gravity remains constant, atmospheric temperature and pressure remains constant with the altitude. Let us consider an oxygen molecule at a room temperature of 27°C.
What is the rms speed of the molecule.
