The earth is moving towards a fixed star with a velocity of30 km s-1. An observer on the earth observes a shift of0.58 Åin the wavelength of light coming from the star. What is the actual wavelength of light (inμm) emitted by the star?

Answer:
0.58
Solution:

Using,Δλ=vcλ
Herev=30 km s-1=3×104 m s-1
c=3×108 m s-1
Δλ=0.58×10-10m
∴ λ=cvΔλ
=3×1083×104×0.58×10-10 m
=0.58×10-6 m
=0.58 μm
