Frequency of vibration of the string, $n = \frac{1}{2 l} \frac{T}{m} \propto \frac{1}{l}$ $∴ \frac{n _{1}}{n _{2}} = \frac{l _{2}}{l _{1}} or l_{2} = \frac{n _{1} \times l _{1}}{n _{2}} = \frac{800 \times 50}{1000} = 40 cm .$ (where $l_{2} =$ final length of the string).
