Two beads each of mass m are fixed on a light rigid rod of length 2l which is free to rotate in a horizontal plane. The bead on the far end is given some velocity v as shown in the figure. If Kcm represents the kinetic energy of the centre of mass of the system and KR represents the rotational kinetic energy of the system, then what is the value of KcmKR?

Answer:
0.90
Solution:

The distance of the centre of mass from the hinge,

rcm=ml+m(2l)m+m=32l

The angular velocity of the system,

ω=v2l

The velocity of the centre of mass of the system,

vcm=3l2ω=34v

⇒Kcm=122mv2cm=9mv216

The moment of inertia of the system about the hinge,

I=ml2+m2l2=5ml2

The rotational kinetic energy of the system,

KR=12Iω2=125ml2v2l2

⇒KR=5mv28

KcmKR=9mv216×85mv2=0.9
