At equilibrium both springs are extended by $x$ : upper spring pulls up with $2 k x$ , lower spring pulls down with $k x$ . So $2 k x = k x + m g \Rightarrow k x = m g$ .

Lower spring cut: only the upper spring (force $2 k x = 2 m g$ upward, unchanged at that instant) and gravity act: $2 m g - m g = ma \Rightarrow a = g$ upward.
