Differentiating: $(x - y) (\frac{d x}{d t} - \frac{d y}{d t}) = - (L - y) \frac{d y}{d t}$ .

With $\frac{d y}{d t} = v$ , $\frac{d x}{d t} = - v_{0}$ and $\frac{x - y}{L - y} = cos α$ : $(- v_{0} - v) cos α = - v$ .
