A man & lift having mass 50 kg & 30 kg respectively as shown in the figure. Man manages to keep the system in rest. There is a small hole at P so that string is not in the contact with lift at point P.
Find the reading of the spring balance. Take g=10 m/s².

For man and lift together, 2T=(50+30)g=800 N, so T=400 N. The spring balance supports the pulley and reads 2T=800 N. For the man, N+T=50g=500 N, so the weighing-scale reading is N=100 N.
