The half-life of the radioactive nucleus is 50 days. The time interval ( t 2 − t 1 ) between the time t 2 when 2 3 of it has decayed and the time t 1 when 1 3 of it had decayed, is

Options:

Answer:
B
Solution:

At time  t 2, 2 3  of the sample had decayed

∴ N⁡ = 1 3 N⁡ 0

∴ 1 3 N⁡ 0 = N⁡ 0 e⁡ - λ t 2 .....(i)

At time  t 1 , 1 3  of the sample had decayed

∴ N⁡ = 2 3 N⁡ 0

∴ 2 3 N⁡ 0 = N⁡ 0 e⁡ - λ t 1 .....(ii)

Divide (i) by (ii), we get

1 2 = e⁡ - λ t 2 e⁡ - λ t 1

1 2 = e⁡ - λ t 2 - t 1

λ( t 2 − t 1 )= ln2

t 2 - t 1 = ln 2 λ = ln 2 ln 2 T⁡ 1 / 2 ∵ λ = ln 2 T⁡ 1 / 2

=T 1/2 =50 days
