The work function of a metal is in the range of2 eV  to  5 eV. Find which of the following wavelength of light cannot be used for the photoelectric effect. (Consider, Planck's constant=4×10−15 eV s, the velocity of light=3×108 m s-1)

Options:

Answer:
B
Solution:

Given that,2 eV ≤ϕ≤5 eV

Wavelength corresponding to the minimum and maximum values of work function are

λmax=hcE=4×10-15×3×1082

=  6×10-7m=600 nm

Andλmin=hcE=4×10-15×3×1085

=  2.4×10-7m=240 nm

Clearly wavelength range would be240≤λ≤600

Thus, the wavelength 650 nm is not suitable for the photoelectric effect.
