A magnetic dipole is under the influence of two magnetic fields. The angle between the field directions is60°and one of the fields has a magnitude of1.2×10-2 T. If the dipole comes to stable equilibrium at an angle of15°with this field, what is the magnitude of the other field?

Options:

Answer:
A
Solution:

Let one of the magnetic fields is B1and other is B2. Angle between B1and B2is 60o.

Given,                B1= 1.2 x 10-2T

Dipole is in equilibrium at an angle 15ofrom B1or 60o- 15o= 45ofrom B2

Torque on dipole due to magnetic field B1

τ 1 = M × B 1  sin  1 5 o ......(i)

where, M is the magnetic moment. Torque on dipole due to magnetic field B2

τ 2 = M × B 2  sin  4 5 o .....(ii)

As dipole is in the equilibrium, then

τ 1 = τ 2

M X B1sin 15o= M x B2sin 45o[From Eqs. (i) and (ii)]

1 . 2 × 1 0 - 2 × sin  1 5 o sin  4 5 o = B 2

B 2 = 1 . 2 × 1 0 - 2 × 0 . 2 5 8 8 0 . 7 0 7 1 = 4 . 4 × 1 0 - 3  T

Thus, the magnitude of the other field is 4.4. x 10-3T.
