By using $s = ut + \frac{1}{2} at^{2}$

For particle : $- 80 = 40 t + \frac{1}{2} (- 10) t^{2}$

$\Rightarrow 5 t^{2} - 40 t - 80 = 0$

$\Rightarrow t^{2} - 8 t - 16 = 0$

$\Rightarrow t = \frac{8 \pm 64 + 64}{2}$

$\Rightarrow t = 4 \pm 42$

as t can't be negative

so $t = (4 + 42) s$
