A man crosses a river in a boat. If he crosses the river in minimum time, he takes10minwith a drift120 m. If he crosses the river taking the shortest path, he takes12.5min, find the width of the river.

Options:

Answer:
D
Solution:

Letvr= velocity of river

vbr= velocity of river in still water and

w= width of river

Given, tmin = 10 min

orwvbr=10...(i)

Drift, in this case, will be,

x=vrt

120=10vr...(ii)

The shortest path is taken when vbis alongAB. In this case,

vb=vbr2-vr2

Now,12.5=wvb=wvbr2-vr2...(iii)

Solving these three equations, we get

vbr = 20 m min-1,

vr = 12 m min-1

andw= 200 m
