A ray of light is incident normally on one face of $3 0^{\circ} - 6 0^{\circ} - 9 0^{\circ}$ prism of refractive index $μ_{P} = 5/3$ immersed in water of refractive index $μ_{m} = 4/3$ as shown in the figure.\\

The minimum refractive index of surrounding medium so that total internal reflection at point P ceases is $\frac{n}{3}$ , find the value of n.

Answer:

2.50

Solution:

TIR at P ceases when $\frac{5}{3} sin 6 0^{\circ} < n$ , i.e. $n > \frac{5}{2 3} = \frac{2.5}{3}$

So n = 2.50

Answer 2.50
