A thin walled glass sphere of radius2.5 cmis filled with water. An objectOis placed at7.5 cmfrom the surface of the sphere. Neglecting the effect of glass wall, at what distance the imageIof the object, measured from the centre of sphere is formed? (refractive index of water =1.333)

Options:

Answer:
C
Solution:

For refraction at first surface,

u=-7.5 cm, R1=2.5 cm

μ1=1, μ2=43

∴  μ2v′-μ1u=μ2-μ1R1

∴   4/3v′-1-7.5=4/3-12.5

⇒   43v′=17.5-17.5=0

⇒  v′=∞

It means the ray is parallel within the sphere.

For refraction at second surface,

u=-∞, μ1=43

μ2=1, R2=-2.5 cm

∴    μ2v′-μ1u=μ2-μ1R2gives

⇒   1v′-4/3-∞=1-4/3-2.5

⇒  v=+ 7.5 cm

i.e. Image is formed at distance7.5 cmto the right ofP2. Hence, distance of final imagePfrom centreC=7.5+2.5=10 cm.
