An equiconvex lens is cut into two halves alongi XOX′ and ii YOY′, as shown in the figure. Letf, f′, f′′be the focal lengths of complete lens, of each in case
(i)and of each half in case(ii), respectively

Choose the correct statement from the following.

Options:

Answer:
C
Solution:

The focal length of an equiconvex lens is

1f=μ-11R1-1R2...(i)

For an equiconvex lens,R1=R2=R

1f=μ-11R-1-R=2μ-1R

Case I:   When the lens is cut alongXOX', then each half becomes equiconvex with

R1=+R,      R2=-R

∴  1f=μ-11R-1-R⇒1fμ-11R+1R

=  μ-12R=1f′           ⇒f′=f

Case II:  When the lens is cut alongYOY', then each half becomes plano-convex with

R1=+R,R2=∞

∴            1f′′=μ-11R1-1R2

=  μ-1 1R-1∞=μ-1R=12f⇒f′′=2f
