Given that, velocity of light in quartz = 1.5 x 10⁸m/s and velocity of light in glycerine = (9/4) x 10⁸m/s. If a slab made of quartz is placed in glycerine as shown in the figure. How much is the shift (in cm) in the position of the object produced by slab?

$n_{quartz} = 2 n_{glycerine} = \frac{4}{3} \Rightarrow μ_{rel} = \frac{n_{quartz}}{n_{glycerine}} = \frac{2}{4 / 3} = \frac{3}{2}$

$shift = t (1 - \frac{1}{μ_{rel}}) = 18 (1 - \frac{1}{3 / 2}) = 6 cm$
