A glass sphere having refractive index3/2is having a small irregularity at its centre. It is placed in a liquid of refractive index43such that the surface of the liquid is at a distancerabove the sphere, wherer=20 cmis radius of the sphere. If the irregularity is viewed from above then what is it's distance (incm) from the centre where eye will observe the irregularity?

Answer:
13.00
Solution:

Consideration refraction at glass-water interface.

μ2v-μ1u=μ2-μ1R

  43v-3-2r=4/3-3/2r

    43v+32r=-16r

   v=r5

Now refraction at water air surface

u=-r+45r=-9r5

μ2v-μ1u=μ2-μ1

1v+4×53×9r=1-4/3

1v=-2027r

v=-27r20

So height above center=2r-27r20

=40r-27r20=1320r=13cm
