A plano-convex lens has diameter5 cmand its thickness at the centre is0.25 cm. If the speed of light inside the lens is2×108 ms-1, then what is the focal length (incm) of the lens?

Answer:
25.25
Solution:

R. I. of lens,

μ=cv=3×1082×108=32

From ΔACO, radius of curvature of lens is,

R2=R12+(R-0.25)2

  R2=(2.5)2+(R-0.25)2

  R2=6.25+R2+0.0625-0.5R

  0.5R=6.3125

  R=12.625cm

F=Rμ-1=12.62532-1=25.25 cm
