The area of cross-section of a large tank is 0.5 m2. It has a narrow opening near the bottom having area of cross-section 1 cm2. A load of 25 kg is applied on the water at the top in the tank. Neglecting the speed of water in the tank, the velocity of the water, coming out of the opening at the time when the height of water level in the tank is 40 cm above the bottom, will be _____ cm s-1.

[Take g=10 m s-2 ]

Question diagram: The area of cross-section of a large tank is 0 . 5 m 2 . It
Answer:
300.00
Solution:

Pressure at point 1 is P1=P0, Pressure at point 2 is P2=P0+mgA

Applying Bernoulli's equation at top and bottom

P1+12ρv12+ρgh1=P2+12ρv22+ρgh2P0+12ρv2+0=P0+mgA+0+ρgh

2505+103×10×0.4=12×103×v2

v=3 m s-1=300 cm s-1
