A tank is filled with water of density1 g cm-3and oil of density0.9 g cm-3. The height of the water layer is100 cmand of the oil layer is400 cm.Ifg=980 cm s-2, then the velocity of efflux from an opening in the bottom of the tank is

Options:

Answer:
A
Solution:

Pressures at the bottom of the tank must be equal to the pressures due to water of heighth.

Ifdw and d0be the densities of water and oil respectively, Pressure at the bottom of the tank

=hwdwg+h0d0g

If this pressure be equivalent to pressure due to water of heighth.

Then, hdwg=hwdwg+h0d0g

h=hw+h0d0dw=100+400×0.91

=100+360=460

According to Torricelli's theorem

v=2gh=2×980×460

=920×980  cm s-1
