A galvanometer of resistance30 Ωis connected to a battery of emf2 Vwith1970 Ωresistance in series. A full-scale deflection of20divisions is obtained in the galvanometer. To reduce the deflection to10divisions, the resistance value (in ohm) in series required is

Answer:
3970.00
Solution:

i=VReff=V1970+30=22000=1×10-3A=1 mA

This current provides full scale deflection (i.e. 20 division) In order to limit the deflection 10 divisions,

the resistances needed to connect  can be obtained as

θ=niABk∴  θ1θ2=i1i2

∴  θ1 :θ2=2

∴  i1:i2=2:1

∴  i2=i12=1×10-32=5×10-4mA

∴  i=VReff+Rs⇒Rs=Vi-Reff

=25×10-4-2000

=25×104-2000

=4×103-2000

=2000 Ω

∴ The resistance of1970 Ωis to be replaced by1970+2000=3970 Ω
