The resistance of the wire isR1. It is now stretched (keeping the volume constant) without breaking so that its length becomes three times. Now the resistance becomesR2, then what is the value ofR2: R1?

Answer:
9.00
Solution:

For a given wire, its resistance

R∝lA
∴  R1∝l1r12

The wire is stretched such that l2=3l1

But density is unchanged.

∴Density =MV=M4πr12l1=M4πr22l2

⇒r22=l1r12l2=r123     …..(i)   ∵l2=3l1

Now, R2∝l2r22

∴  R2∝9l1r12           ....ii

From (i) and (ii)

∴  R2:R1=9:1
