Let the coefficients of third, fourth and fifth terms in the expansion ofx+ax2n, x0,be in the ratio12:8:3.Then the term independent ofxin the expansion, is equal to _______.

Answer:
4.00
Solution:

The general term in the expansion of a+bn is Tr+1=Crnan-rbr.

Hence, the general term in the expansion of x+ax2n is Tr+1=Crn(x)n-rax2r

Tr+1=Crnarxn-3r

Given the coefficients of third, fourth and fifth terms are in the ratio 12:8:3

C2na2:C3na3:C4na4=12:8:3

C2na2C3na3=128 and C3na3C4na4=83

Using CrnCr+1n=r+1n-r,

3n-2a=32 and 4n-3a=83

On dividing the two equations, we get 3n-34n-2=916

4n-12=3n-6

n=6 and a=12.

For term independent of xn=3r

r=2.

 The coefficient isC26122=154.

Hence, the nearest integer is 4.
