CuSO₄·5H₂O and NiSO₄·7H₂O both form colored ammine complexes with excess NH₄OH. Cu²⁺ forms a deep blue tetraammine copper(II) complex $[C u (N H_{3})_{4}]^{2 +}$ , while Ni²⁺ forms a blue/violet hexaammine complex $[N i (N H_{3})_{6}]^{2 +}$ . Hence, both give blue-colored solutions in excess ammonia. This reaction is used as a confirmatory test for Cu²⁺ and Ni²⁺ in salt analysis.
