An open flask containing air is heated from 300 K to 500 K . What percentage of air will be escaped to the atmosphere, if pressure is keeping constant?
Answer:
40
Solution:
Use the ideal gas law PV = nRT. The flask is open, so the pressure P is constant, and the volume V of the flask is fixed. Then n ∝ 1/T, i.e. n₁T₁ = n₂T₂.
n₂/n₁ = T₁/T₂ = 300/500 = 3/5.
So 3/5 of the initial air remains in the flask, and the fraction that escaped = 1 - 3/5 = 2/5.
Percentage escaped = (2/5) × 100 = 40%.
