Passage / Comprehension

The leak rate, -dp/dt, of a gas is directly proportional to the difference in pressure of the gas in the cylinder and the external pressure. Some ideal gas is taken in a cylinder of 10 l capacity at 20 atm and 300 K. The proportionality constant is k = 10-3 s-1. The constant external pressure is 1 atm. (ln 38 = 3.6, ln 2 = 0.7, ln 10 = 2.3)

How many balloons of capacity 2.0 dm3 can be filled at 1 atm and 27°C by using the gas effused out in 1 h?

Options:

Answer:
B
Solution:

Gas leaked in 1 h: Δ n = Δ p · V/RT = (20 - 1.5)× 10/(0.0821 × 300) = 185/24.63 = 7.51 mol. Each balloon holds n = pV/RT = 1 × 2.0/(0.0821 × 300) = 0.0812 mol. Number of balloons = 7.51/0.0812 = 92.5, i.e. 92 full balloons. Hence Ans (b).
