Gaseous benzene reacts with hydrogen gas in presence of a nickel catalyst to form gaseous cyclohexane according to the reaction
C6H6g+3H2gC6H12g
A mixture ofC6H6and excessH2has a pressure of 60 mm of Hg in an unknown volume. After the gas has been passed over a nickel catalyst and all the benzene converted to cyclohexane, the pressure of the gas was 30 mm of Hg in the same volume and temperature. The fraction ofC6H6(by volume) present in the original volume is 1/y. The value of 'y' is

Answer:
6.00
Solution:

Suppose initially, pressure ofC6H6g=P1mm and that ofH2g=P2mm.
SoP1+P2=60mm …(i)
After the reaction
Pressure ofC6H6g=0
Pressure ofH2g=P2-3P1
Pressure ofC6H12g=P1
Total pressure=P2-3P1+P1=30mm
OrP2-2P1=30mm …(ii)
Solving (i) and (ii) we get
P1=10mm
P2=50mm
Fraction ofC6H6gby volume = Fraction of moles = Fraction of pressures
=1060=16
