When 2-butyne is treated with ${\mathrm{H}}_2$ /Lindlar's catalyst, compound $\mathrm{X}$ (cis-2-butene) is produced as the major product; and when treated with $\mathrm{Na}/$ liq ${\mathrm{NH}}_3$ it produces $\mathrm{Y}$ (trans -2- butene) as the major product. Cisisomer $(\mathrm{X})$ will have higher dipole moment and higher boiling point than $\mathrm{trans}(\mathrm{Y})$.
